The role of Ecologist is key to this organisation, tasked with conducting vital ecological assessments and promoting sustainable environmental practices throughout Northern Scotland. This position offers the chance to lead ecological projects, provide expert advice on woodland management and harvesting, and work collaboratively with stakeholders to deliver innovative ecological solutions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and manage ecological surveys and assessments, ensuring delivery meets client needs and company objectives while managing budgets, timelines, and resources efficiently.

  • Provide expert guidance to internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, best practices, and company policies.

  • Prepare detailed technical reports, ecological assessments, and licence applications required for planning and regulatory approvals.

  • Maintain high environmental and health & safety standards by conducting inspections, audits, risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.

  • Mentor and train colleagues in ecological methods such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Environmental and Community Impact Assessments (ECIAs), and Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs).

  • Support business development by identifying new ecological opportunities and contributing to forestry and environmental management operations.


Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Degree in ecology, environmental science, land use, or a related discipline.

  • Proven track record of successfully leading ecological projects.

  • Experience conducting and coordinating habitat and protected species surveys.

  • Holder of relevant protected species licences (e.g., bats, newts) and a CSCS card.

  • Strong understanding of UK environmental legislation and policy.

  • Membership with CIEEM (Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management) or equivalent professional body.

  • Highly organised with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Skilled relationship builder with demonstrated ability to maintain strong client relations.

  • Self-motivated with commercial awareness.

  • Proficient in GIS tools (e.g., QGIS), mobile data collection apps, and Microsoft 365 for ecological data management and reporting.

  • UK driving licence with willingness to travel frequently across Northern Scotland.


Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of forestry management and experience working in multidisciplinary environmental teams.

  • Competent in preparing PEAs, ECIAs, HRAs, management plans, and designing effective mitigation strategies.
