Maintenance Operative

Description:

Balfour Beatty plc, one of the UK’s leading infrastructure and construction firms, is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Operative to join their Harrow-based team. The role is within Connect Plus Services (CPS) — a partnership between Balfour Beatty, Atkins, and Egis Road Operation UK — responsible for maintaining and operating the M25 network 24/7, 365 days a year.

As a Maintenance Operative, you will play an essential role in ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of one of the UK’s most critical highway networks. This is a hands-on position requiring practical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform routine and emergency maintenance activities across the M25 DBFO Network as directed by the Line Manager.

• Carry out a wide range of operational duties including:

  • Hazard clearance and cyclical maintenance

  • Graffiti removal and litter picking

  • Carriageway repairs and soft estate maintenance (grass cutting, vegetation control)

  • Sign maintenance, cleansing, and fence repairs (safety and boundary fences)

• Implement Traffic Management procedures safely and efficiently in accordance with company policies and industry standards.

• Conduct vehicle checks and maintain accurate driving records per CPS and legal requirements.

• Maintain tools, equipment, and property responsibly, reporting any defects promptly.

• Participate in Winter Service rotas and attend necessary training to maintain required qualifications.

• Promote CPS’s Zero Harm safety culture and contribute to sustainability initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience Required:

Essential Qualifications:

• Valid UK Driving Licence

• CSCS Operative Card

Essential Experience:

• Previous work on live motorway or All-Purpose Trunk Road (APTR) networks.

• Experience in traffic, transport, or highway operations.

Additional Requirements:

• Must successfully pass a Security Check and annual driving licence verification.

• Good written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to follow safety protocols and company policies.
