Medical Laboratory Assistant

 

Description:

You will work as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (Sample Handler) within the Beatson Clinical Research Facility (BCRF), supporting cancer clinical research across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. You will assist with the processing, storage and management of research samples for a range of Phase I to Phase III cancer trials undertaken within the facility.

Working under the supervision of the Senior Research Nurses, you will ensure samples are handled, processed and stored in line with trial protocols and manuals. You will also support the accurate recording of sample information, maintaining chain of custody documentation and arranging shipment of samples as required.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
 

  • This is a full-time fixed-term post for 7 months to provide maternity cover , working these hours Monday to Friday
  • You will be based at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre
     

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for processing research samples in accordance with trial manuals, ensuring samples are correctly prepared, stored and tracked throughout the research process.

You will maintain accurate records of sample handling, including chain of custody documentation, and support the safe and timely shipment of samples. You will work closely with the clinical research team to ensure high-quality sample management and contribute to the delivery of cancer clinical research within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
 

  • 3 Highers at Grade C or above, including either Chemistry or Biology together with Maths, or an SVQ Level 3 in a relevant science subject, or completion of equivalent accredited education.
  • Previous laboratory experience is desirable.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team within a busy clinical environment.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of good numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge.
