Research Associate

Description:

The University of Bath is inviting applications for a Research Associate position focused on monolayer nanoporous graphene membranes for liquid separations. This is a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative 18-month full-time position supported by the EPSRC-funded Programme Grant ‘SynHiSel’, which brings together leading UK institutions including Bath, Manchester, Newcastle, Imperial College, Queen Mary, and Edinburgh.

This role is at the forefront of tackling one of the most pressing industrial challenges: making chemical separations more energy-efficient. Currently, chemical separations account for 10–15% of global energy usage, with membrane technologies offering a transformative solution by potentially increasing efficiency tenfold while cutting millions of tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Despite this potential, most current membranes lack the precision and scalability required. The research aims to overcome these barriers using advanced graphene-based materials.

As part of a vibrant, cross-university research initiative, the selected candidate will conduct cutting-edge experiments and contribute to material development, characterization, and performance assessment. The role is highly collaborative and will involve working alongside top-tier researchers across institutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct experimental research on graphene-based membranes for liquid separations.

  • Design and fabricate nanoporous monolayer membranes.

  • Characterize membrane materials and evaluate their selectivity and permeability.

  • Collaborate closely with partner universities and researchers across the SynHiSel program.

  • Contribute to publications, presentations, and wider dissemination of research outcomes.

Candidate Requirements:

  • PhD in chemical engineering, materials science, nanotechnology, or a closely related field (or near completion).

  • Proven experience in experimental research and membrane technologies.

  • Strong understanding of materials characterization techniques and nanoscale engineering.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary research teams.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Benefits:

  • Generous employer-contributed pension schemes.

  • Extensive annual leave with five additional discretionary days.

  • Staff discount on postgraduate tuition and language courses.

  • Health and wellbeing services including free counselling via Health Assured.

  • Cycle-to-work and electric vehicle salary sacrifice schemes.

  • Staff gym discount and free access to local museums.

  • Relocation allowance and visa reimbursement support.

  • Family-friendly and inclusive working environment, accredited as a Disability Confident Leader and Athena SWAN Silver Award recipient.
