Senior Design Manager

Description:

Laing O'Rourke, a global leader in engineering and construction, is seeking Senior Design Managers to join ongoing and upcoming power and National Grid infrastructure projects across England and Wales. This opportunity is ideal for professionals with a background in Civils & Geo or Electrical Engineering, who are passionate about design excellence and aspire to work on some of the UK’s most iconic infrastructure developments.

You’ll be at the forefront of design delivery, leading complex project design phases, collaborating with internal teams, clients, and external designers. You’ll contribute to shaping innovative, buildable, and technically sound solutions while ensuring effective design control and compliance from pre-construction through delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the pre-construction phase design briefings and processes for large-scale infrastructure projects.

• Implement and manage Laing O’Rourke’s design management procedures, serving as a functional link between design, commercial, and construction teams.

• Drive collaborative design reviews, enabling the project team to identify and reduce risks.

• Oversee the production, control, and distribution of design documentation at each project stage.

• Ensure all design information is thoroughly reviewed for buildability, safety, compliance, and technical completeness.

• Support the Design Leader in encouraging innovation, best practices, and continuous improvement in design management.

• Promote and uphold Laing O’Rourke’s values and vision in all design-related activities.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Proven experience managing end-to-end design delivery in construction or building services projects.

• A first degree in Building Services, Civils & Geo, or other related construction disciplines.

• Deep understanding of sector-specific design and strong background in power/National Grid or infrastructure projects.

• Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.

• A passion for design quality, technical excellence, and sustainable delivery outcomes.
