Assistant Scientist

 

Description:

Fera Science Ltd. is seeking talented graduates to join their team in 2026 to contribute to Food Safety & Biosecurity initiatives. Graduates will begin their careers as Assistant Scientists, working closely with scientists and technical specialists. The role involves preparing and extracting samples from various sources for chemical analysis, providing both qualitative and quantitative information on chemicals present, and supporting vital commercial research projects. Areas of expertise may include chemical safety, environmental fate, ecotoxicology, pesticides, authenticity, formulations, veterinary medicines, contaminants, and packaging.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare samples for analysis using established techniques according to standard operating procedures (SOPs)

  • Extract and clean up samples in preparation for analysis

  • Follow appropriate quality assurance and safety procedures

  • Maintain laboratory facilities, including equipment checks, instrument maintenance, and housekeeping

  • Support sample preparation during busy periods, including logging samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

  • Operate analytical instrumentation such as HPLC

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Scientific qualification, preferably in chemistry

  • Practical IT experience, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Ability to keep clear written records and work methodically with attention to detail

  • Self-motivated with the ability to develop strong working relationships

  • Laboratory experience desirable but not essential

  • Experience operating within a quality system (e.g., UKAS, GLP) beneficial
