Research Associate

Description:

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is inviting applications for a Research Associate to join the Antimicrobial Resistance, Omics and Microbiota (AROM) research group in the School of Science and Technology. This role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to critical research addressing drug-resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs) by exploring and characterising novel antimicrobial agents.

As a member of the AROM research group, the post-holder will engage in laboratory-based research focused on the identification, expression, and characterisation of novel antimicrobials. The group combines expertise in classical microbiology, molecular biology, systems biology, and bioinformatics to explore microbial pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, host–microbiome interactions, and more.

The AROM group is part of the Centre for Systems Health and Integrated Metabolic Research (SHiMR), a vibrant hub for interdisciplinary health research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct laboratory research on antimicrobial agents targeting drug-resistant UTIs.

  • Apply molecular and classical microbiology techniques under varied atmospheric conditions (aerobic, anaerobic, microaerophilic).

  • Collaborate within the interdisciplinary research team to deliver data-driven outcomes.

  • Support broader research objectives within the AROM and SHiMR groups.

  • Perform additional duties as reasonably required by the role, with flexibility built in.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A postgraduate qualification in microbiology, molecular biology, biomedical science, or a related field.

  • Laboratory experience with techniques relevant to antimicrobial discovery.

  • A passion for tackling antimicrobial resistance through innovative science.

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and organisational skills.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary: £28,608–£32,089 per year (monthly £2384–£2674)

  • 30–35 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays and university closure days (pro rata)

  • Hybrid and flexible working model

  • Extensive development and career progression opportunities

  • Access to a wide range of wellbeing resources and staff discounts

  • Life assurance and income protection via salary sacrifice retirement savings plan

  • Inclusive and diverse working culture that supports underrepresented groups

Special Notes:

  • This is a 1-year fixed-term role

  • The role is not eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK immigration system. Candidates must already have or be eligible to obtain the right to work in the UK via another route.

  • The role may involve DBS checks depending on campus allocation.

  • Applicants with unspent convictions are expected to declare them in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974)
