Balfour Beatty Highways is hiring a Section Engineer to join the A57 Link Road scheme in Manchester. As a leading provider of asset strategy, management, and planning consultancy services, we are committed to delivering sustainable and innovative solutions that enhance highway networks across the UK. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in a major infrastructure project, ensuring safety, efficiency, and high-quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise a team of Site Engineers and Graduate/Apprentice Engineers.
  • Perform complex setting out and coach team members on best practices.
  • Develop and manage Activity Control Plans to ensure project quality and efficiency.
  • Implement project specifications and maintain accurate quality records.
  • Identify and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) while resolving technical queries.
  • Prepare Method Statements and Risk Assessments to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Develop weekly programmes, track progress, and communicate targets to the workforce.
  • Monitor project waste, subcontractor performance, and material reconciliations.
  • Ensure compliance with H&S regulations and contract requirements under NEC contracts.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, contributing expertise to major projects.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

Education & Professional Requirements:

  • Relevant engineering degree and professional qualifications.
  • CSCS Card and valid driving license required.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS certification preferred.

Technical & Industry Knowledge:

  • Experience in major highway projects (Earthworks, Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, or Roadworks).
  • Basic understanding of temporary works and ability to generate Temporary Works Design Briefs.
  • Familiarity with STATS, Utilities, and lifting operations.
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and industry best practices.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with teams.
  • Strong analytical skills and a keen eye for detail.
