Senior Project Planner

Description:

Laing O'Rourke, an international engineering and construction leader, is seeking a Senior Project Planner to play a pivotal role in delivering Single Living Accommodation (SLA) schemes for the UK Ministry of Defence. This long-term, high-profile national programme offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of UK defence infrastructure.

The successful candidate will initially be based at Worksop or Manchester (Sale) before transitioning to a site-based role in Lincoln as the project moves from Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) into full delivery in 2026.

This is not a traditional planning role—it’s a leadership opportunity where you will shape delivery strategies, guide teams, and influence outcomes on nationally significant projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead development of project programmes from first principles and manage existing plans.

  • Collaborate with design, engineering, and commercial teams to align and optimise schedules.

  • Engage with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and client stakeholders to ensure compliance with contractual expectations.

  • Develop strategic, tender, procurement, design, and short-term construction programmes.

  • Establish robust planning controls and reporting in accordance with NEC4 requirements.

  • Mentor and support junior planners, promoting a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Proven track record in planning large infrastructure or construction projects.

  • Ability to build programmes from first principles, interpreting drawings and technical documents.

  • Experience across the full project lifecycle—from design to delivery.

  • Proficiency in Primavera P6 and Asta Powerproject (MS Project and Power BI desirable).

  • Strong commercial and contractual understanding, particularly of NEC4.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field.

  • CIOB membership (preferred but not essential).

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary and tailored benefits package.

  • Opportunity to play a defining role in a major national defence programme.

  • Long-term career development and leadership opportunities.

  • Supportive team culture with ongoing coaching and professional growth.

  • Involvement in shaping planning best practices within the organisation.
